For morbidly obese people who suffer from diabetes, hypertension, or other weight-related medical concerns, the
LAP BAND procedure offers a valuable weight loss tool. By restricting the amount of food the stomach can hold and increasing the length of time it takes the stomach to empty, the LAP BAND helps patients take the first steps toward a healthy lifestyle. The name "LAP BAND" is a combination of the surgical technique used (laparoscopic) and the name of the implanted device (gastric band).Morbid obesity is defined as having a Body Mass Index of 40 or more and being at least 100 pounds over your ideal weight. Candidates for the LAP BAND procedure must be able to show that they have been morbidly obese for more than five years. They must also be able to produce documentation of their previous weight loss attempts. Most people who are candidates for the LAP BAND procedure have or are likely to have medical complications that will be helped or cured by significant weight loss.
Candidates for LAP BAND surgery must be at least 18 years of age. They must also be willing to make the necessary lifestyle changes for long term weight loss and continue to have their progress monitored by their bariatric surgeon. Candidates must not drink alcohol in excess.
The LAP BAND is not right for everyone. People with ulcers, Crohn's disease, or other gastrointestinal conditions should not have the LAP BAND procedure. Cirrhosis, chronic pancreatis, and severe heart or lung disease would also disqualify you from surgery. Meeting with an experienced bariatric surgeon can help you determine if you have any medical problems that would interfere with this unique procedure.
